I grew up curious about how things worked and never really outgrew it. I studied electrical engineering at the University of Alberta, then went back through NAIT's computer engineering technology diploma to round out the software and controls side. Somewhere in there embedded became the thread I kept pulling on. I keep learning by building: every project pulls in a new stack or a new domain, and I like the parts where hardware, controls, and software have to meet.
Professionally I do controls and automation: SCADA, HMIs, PLC work, the systems that don't get to fail. On the side I build web things, mostly Next.js and Postgres, often for the systems above. I can spec the hardware, program the microcontroller, and ship the dashboard that visualises the data.
Where the electrical background lives
Firmware for microcontrollers, sensor networks, and the low-power devices that sit at the edge of larger systems. Real-time, resource-constrained work where every byte and every wake cycle matters.
Board-level design and integration when the project calls for it. I like this part of the stack because the hardware decides whether the software actually works, and there is no arguing with it.
